Rory Sabbatini Produces Dramatic Finish
Going into the final round, Sabbatini was in the top 10. Playing well in the first two rounds, but he had some tough competition to overcome in the latter part of the tournament being up against Steven Alker, Darren Clarke and Henrik Stenson. Right from the first hole he showed he had his eyes on the prize with a three-under par start. However, he made a costly mistake on the third hole with a Bogey.
Despite this, he played well on the back nine, finishing with a three-under par 33. This kept him in contention for the title with many winners within striking distance. Sabbatini played brilliantly in the final few holes with five under par over his final four holes. He started the final five holes four under par and birdied and eagled to make three birdies on the last three holes. This gave him a nine-under par 62 to finish the tournament 13-under overall. It was enough to get the title, being one shot ahead of Clark.

“Forget about anything else, try to stay in the moment and hit each shot.”
This seemed to work well for him. As he tried to stay focused in the final holes of the tournament rather than letting the nerves take over. This shows how important it is to stay calm in professional golf. And he showed how good his putting was with a brilliant final round to pick up his first ever victory on the Champions Tour.
A Return to Golf After More Than Two Years Away
This victory was a huge achievement as Sabbatini had not played competitive golf for over two years. Last time he won on the PGA Tour was in the 2011 Honda Classic. He was unsure if he wanted to continue after turning 50. “Taking some time out was very important for me mentally. Physically we can recover but mentally it was taking its toll.” Overall he decided to give the PGA Tour Champions a go. He was able to enjoy playing golf again with people he knows from the PGA Tour.
Before the Stifel Charity Classic, he had shown he could still perform well. He tied for second place at Pebble Beach last month and picked up two third places earlier in the summer. Although this did show positive signs, he needed to be consistent and play well to win. He played incredibly well in the final round in St Louis.
