Matt Fitzpatrick turned last week’s disappointment into victory, claiming a one-shot win at the Valspar Championship with a final-round 68.
After narrowly losing at THE PLAYERS Championship, Fitzpatrick admitted the defeat lingered longer than usual. However, he responded with composure under pressure, delivering a clutch birdie on the final hole to secure the title.
Final-Hour Duel Seals the Victory
Fitzpatrick found himself in a tight contest with David Lipsky during the closing stretch. Both players traded key moments, but Fitzpatrick took control with a decisive birdie putt from just inside 15 feet on the 18th.
Earlier, he had surged ahead with a 30-foot birdie on the par-3 15th. Lipsky responded with a birdie of his own, keeping the pressure on until the final hole. However, Lipsky’s long birdie attempt on 18 narrowly missed, leaving him one shot short after a round of 70.
Challenging Course Tests the Field
The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook proved demanding throughout the tournament. Firm and fast conditions challenged even the leaders, with several players struggling to maintain momentum.
Sungjae Im, who entered the final round with a three-shot lead, faltered early and finished tied for fourth after a 74. Brandt Snedeker also fell out of contention following a difficult back nine.
Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, remained steady despite missing several short birdie chances. He stayed patient and capitalized when it mattered most.
Strong Finish Caps Resilient Performance
Fitzpatrick closed the tournament at 11-under 273, securing his third PGA TOUR title. The win also adds to his growing list of international victories, reinforcing his consistency at the highest level.
For Lipsky, the runner-up finish marks a significant step forward. Starting the season with conditional status, he now moves into a stronger position in the FedEx Cup standings.
Fitzpatrick’s ability to maintain confidence after last week’s setback proved decisive. His performance across all four rounds highlighted both resilience and control under pressure.
