Tiger Woods underwent surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg, just a month before the 2025 Masters. This development makes it highly unlikely that the 15-time major champion will compete at Augusta National this year.
A Devastating Setback
The 49-year-old golf legend revealed that he sustained the injury while increasing his training at home. “I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,” Woods stated. The surgery, performed by Dr. Charlton Stucken at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, was described as a success.
Recovery from Achilles surgery typically takes four to six months, meaning Woods will likely miss the entire 2025 season.
Familiar Territory for Woods
Tiger Woods has battled multiple injuries over the years, including back surgeries and a near-fatal car accident in 2021. His resilience has become legendary, but each setback makes his return more challenging.
He has not played in an official PGA Tour event since The Open Championship last summer. He initially planned to play in the 2025 Genesis Invitational, an event he hosts but had to withdraw just days before its start.
Masters Streak Comes to an End?
If Tiger Woods misses the 2025 Masters, it will be only the second time since 2017 that he has skipped the tournament. His last absence came in 2021, following his car accident. Despite these challenges, Tiger Woods has remained active in the sport, recently taking part in the launch of TGL, a tech-infused golf league co-founded with Rory McIlroy.
Tiger Woods’ future remains uncertain. While he has repeatedly defied the odds, recovering from an Achilles rupture is a long and difficult process. Will he return in 2026, or is this another sign that his historic career is nearing its end?
