The Mountain West Conference has honored two standout golfers for their recent performances, naming Fresno State’s James Watney as Golfer of the Week and Wyoming’s Brody Leid as Freshman of the Week.
Watney’s Career-Best Performance Fuels Fresno State Victory
Competing at Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, James Watney posted a career-low 9-under-par 204, tying for second place individually.
He demonstrated impressive consistency with three consecutive rounds of 3-under 68, helping Fresno State secure a dramatic playoff victory—their first home event win since 2002.
This marks Watney’s best-ever finish in a college event and his second top-10 finish of the season, further solidifying his growth as a competitor.
Leid Continues to Shine for Wyoming
Freshman Brody Leid impressed at the Wyoming Desert Classic, finishing 22nd place with a 3-under-par 213 across three rounds.
His performance included overcoming an opening 1-over 73 with a 3-under 69 in round two and finishing with a 1-under 71.
Leid recorded 12 birdies, with five coming in the second round, contributing to Wyoming’s sixth-place team finish.
This recognition marks his second MW honor, having previously earned Freshman of the Month in November.
Mountain West golf season: Looking Ahead
As the season unfolds, Watney and Leid have cemented themselves as key players in their respective programs.
Will Watney continue his strong momentum, and can Leid build on his early success? The Mountain West golf season is far from over, and these two rising stars are the ones to watch.
