Matt Fitzpatrick delivered one of the clutch performances of the PGA Tour season on Sunday, beating world number one Scottie Scheffler in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.
The Englishman looked set to win in regulation, playing his first 17 holes of the final round in two under without a bogey. But a poor chip on the 72nd hole led to a bogey five on the 18th, allowing Scheffler to draw level after completing a four-under 67.
Fitzpatrick did not let the setback linger. On the first playoff hole, the 31-year-old hit a superb approach and calmly converted the birdie putt to claim his second PGA Tour title in the space of a month.
“To win it twice means the world,” Fitzpatrick said. “To go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get over the line at the 73rd hole is special.”
Fitzpatrick had entered the final round with a three-shot lead, looking to back up his Valspar Championship victory in March. Scheffler mounted a strong charge throughout the day, closing the gap to one by the time both players stood on the 18th tee. While Scheffler got up and down for par, Fitzpatrick’s chip let him down at the crucial moment.
Scheffler was gracious in defeat, acknowledging how well his playing partner performed all week. “I put up a good fight this week,” he said. “Every time he needed something, he made something happen. He earned this one for sure.”
The result means Scheffler has now finished second in back-to-back weeks, having also been runner-up to Rory McIlroy at last week’s Masters. Fitzpatrick’s win also continues a remarkable run of form that includes a second-place finish at last month’s Players Championship.
