The LSU golf team made a significant move up the leaderboard in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic, delivering an impressive 14-under-par round of 274. With standout performances from Arni Sveinsson, Algot Kleen, and Jay Mendell, the Tigers are now tied for fourth place heading into the final round at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
A Standout Performance
Freshman Sveinsson led the way with a 6-under 66, his second-lowest round of the season, featuring six birdies and a bogey-free scorecard. Close behind, Kleen posted a 5-under 67, while Mendell contributed with a 3-under 69, further strengthening LSU’s positioning.
Thanks to this strong second round, LSU now trails tournament leader Purdue by just eight strokes. The top five standings are:
- Purdue: 28-under-par (548)
- Ole Miss: 27-under-par (549)
- South Carolina: 22-under-par (554)
- Georgia & LSU (Tied): 20-under-par (556)
Intense Individual Battle
Beyond the team competition, Sveinsson and Kleen have positioned themselves in the hunt for the individual title, both tied for third place at 8-under-par (136). They trail leaders Kent Hsiao (Purdue) and Cohen Trolio (Ole Miss), who sit at 12-under-par (132).
Sveinsson made a significant 18-spot leap from his first-round standing, while Kleen climbed ten positions. Mendell also made strides, moving up 19 places to tie for 25th place after a clutch finish—including three birdies in his final four holes.
Final Round Showdown
With the final round set to begin at 5:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. local time), LSU will be grouped with Georgia and Oklahoma as they attempt to close the gap and contend for the title.
