The ongoing impasse between LIV Golf and the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) shows no immediate sign of resolution, with newly appointed OWGR chairman Trevor Immelman emphasizing that the next move rests firmly with LIV Golf. Despite several internal changes and system adjustments, the Saudi-backed league has not reapplied for ranking point eligibility since withdrawing its previous application in May 2024.
LIV’s Application Status
Immelman confirmed in a recent interview that:
- LIV Golf has no current application under review.
- The OWGR maintains an open-door policy but will not proactively court leagues.
- Despite so-called “serious discussions”, OWGR remains neutral and procedural.
“There’s no application from their side. The ball is in their court,” said Immelman, reiterating that LIV must initiate the next steps should it wish to be reconsidered for ranking points.
Structural Concerns and Rejections
The OWGR previously denied LIV’s application due to several structural issues:
- Team-based scoring impacting individual results.
- Limited roster changes and virtually no relegation or promotion systems.
- Insufficient openness when compared to other qualifying tours.
Although LIV has tried to address some concerns by introducing a promotion event and aligning with the Asian Tour’s International Series, these efforts have yet to be matched with a formal reapplication. With just a single promotion slot available in 2024, critics question the tour’s commitment to meritocracy.
Exclusion from Golf’s Elite Events
While select LIV players, such as Joaquin Niemann have received exemptions or special invites to the majors, the vast majority continue to face challenges in qualifying due to the lack of OWGR points. This restriction severely impacts their ability to participate in golf’s most prestigious tournaments.
Future Outlook
Immelman mentioned an evolving professional relationship with LIV’s new CEO Scott O’Neil, stating O’Neil “understands the business world in sport” but is still acclimating to golf. However, there is no concrete indication that LIV is ready to overhaul its competition format or reapply to OWGR with a revamped structure.
Until then, the standoff persists, with OWGR holding firm on its standards and LIV remaining on the outside looking in. Whether LIV decides to re-engage with the OWGR will determine how this chapter unfolds.
