Bradley Names Woodland as Final Vice Captain

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley has officially appointed Gary Woodland as the fifth and final vice captain for Team USA. Woodland, a major champion and four-time PGA Tour winner, brings valuable experience and composure to the leadership team. This will be his first time serving in a Ryder Cup capacity, though he has represented the United States at the Presidents Cup in past years.

Bradley praised Woodland’s resilience and leadership, particularly noting his recent return to form after undergoing brain surgery and earning the PGA Tour Courage Award. Bradley said Woodland’s ability to stay calm under pressure will be a crucial asset as the team prepares to take on Europe at Bethpage Black.

Could Bradley Also Play?

Bradley’s recent victory at the Travelers Championship has sparked talk about the possibility of him serving as a playing captain. That hasn’t happened since Arnold Palmer led the team in 1963.

While Bradley has maintained that he would only play if he qualifies automatically, his performance has pushed him into ninth place in the current Ryder Cup standings, just outside the automatic spots. He admitted that the win “changes the story a little,” and he is now more open to the idea of fulfilling both roles if his form continues.

Support Within the Team

Bradley has received strong backing from fellow American players for the idea of a player-captain role. Max Homa commended his energy and leadership, while Collin Morikawa praised his intensity and team-first mindset.

With vice captains including Woodland, Jim Furyk, Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, and Brandt Snedeker, Bradley would be well-supported if he ends up competing while captaining. The experienced group could help him manage duties both on and off the course.

Balancing Roles Comes With Challenges

While enthusiasm is growing, there are concerns about the logistical and mental demands of being both a player and captain in today’s Ryder Cup environment. The responsibilities range from media obligations and pairings to motivating teammates.

However, Bradley believes much of the heavy lifting can be managed by his trusted vice captains. He cited previous examples, such as Tiger Woods’ stint as a playing captain in the Presidents Cup, as proof that it’s possible with the right structure in place.
