Max Homa Begins New Chapter with Caddie Swap at Valero Texas Open

Golf Alignment Tips 1

Max Homa has entered a new chapter in his 2025 PGA TOUR season with significant changes both on and off the course. Arriving at the Valero Texas Open, Homa is making headlines with a fresh caddie and renewed focus, aiming to shift the course of a difficult year.

Longtime caddie and friend Joe Greiner is no longer part of Homa’s team. Their partnership, built on decades of friendship and highlighted by six PGA TOUR victories, came to an end recently. Reflecting on their split, Homa said, “We have parted ways and it will be sad to see him go… I’ll always be grateful to have walked the fairways with one of my best friends.”

Taking over Greiner’s role is Bill Harke, a caddie with experience working alongside Tour veterans like Chris Kirk and Colt Knost. While their professional connection is new, the pressure to perform is massive as Homa faces a challenging stretch in the season.

Currently ranked 157th in the FedExCup standings and No. 78 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), Homa is in survival mode. Despite a T3 finish at the Augusta National last year, his recent performances have been underwhelming. Multiple missed cuts, including a tough outing at THE PLAYERS Championship, signal a concerning trend that contrasts sharply with his peak form.

This week’s tournament is more than just another event—it’s a litmus test. Though he’s secured a start at the Masters thanks to last year’s performance, Homa is currently outside the OWGR thresholds for both the U.S. Open (Top 60 required) and The Open Championship at Royal Portrush (Top 50 required).

His changes go beyond the caddie switch:

  • Moved from Titleist to Cobra equipment
  • Transitioned coaching from Mark Blackburn to consultant John Scott Rattan
  • Signed new apparel deals with Lululemon and Puma

Despite these sweeping changes, results have yet to turn. Homa recently told PGATOUR.COM, “I feel like I deserve to be the best player in the world at some point… and I’m going the complete opposite direction.” His honesty underscores the mental battle of reclaiming elite form.

With time running out and major qualification stakes looming, San Antonio might just be where Homa begins his climb back. Whether this marks the turning point is still unknown, but the golf world is watching with anticipation.
