Chinese golfer Wenyi Ding achieved a significant triumph at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, narrowly overcoming Ziqin Zhou by one stroke at Gotemba’s Taiheiyo Club in Japan. This victory secures him esteemed invitations to both the 2025 Masters Tournament and The Open Championship. Nevertheless, as a talented 19-year-old, he might consider turning professional and possibly bypass these opportunities.
Wenyi Ding Contemplates His Future
Wenyi Ding, ranked fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, delivered four consistent rounds of 3-under 67 to secure the win. Reflecting on his triumph, Ding said, “Last year, I lost in the playoffs and just felt like I could play better. And this year I got the trophy, so it’s amazing.” His decisive birdie on the par-3 17th hole helped him edge out his fellow countryman Zhou.
Despite the win, Ding faces a crucial choice: remain an amateur to play in the majors or turn professional to pursue a DP World Tour card. “It’s a problem,” he admitted when asked about his future. Currently leading the Global Amateur Pathway ranking, Ding could earn a full tour card if he stays amateur until October 15. “I think more likely I should take the card,” Ding added, signaling his desire to turn professional soon.
Regardless of his decision, Wenyi Ding remains confident, stating, “No matter what, I’m amateur or pro, I will still play the Masters and The Open.” His victory in Japan serves as a testament to his growing potential in the professional golf world.
