Sam Horsfield’s hopes of returning to The Open Championship came to an abrupt end at West Lancashire. The LIV Golf pro shot a 43 on his first nine holes, a stretch that included three double bogeys. Frustrated, Horsfield walked off the course without officially notifying tournament officials. As a result, he was disqualified from the qualifier. His early exit means he will miss the chance to compete at Royal Portrush this July.
Meronk Withdraws After First Round
Adrian Meronk, another LIV golfer, also failed to advance from Final Qualifying. Playing at Dundonald Links in Scotland, Meronk posted a disappointing opening round of 75 before choosing to withdraw ahead of the second round. Though not disqualified, his decision to retire early effectively ended his Open campaign.
Mixed Results for LIV Golf Contingent
While Horsfield and Meronk made early exits, other LIV Golf representatives found success. Lee Westwood shot seven under at Dundonald to secure his place at Royal Portrush. He will be joined by Lucas Herbert and Dean Burmester, who qualified through strong performances at Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire respectively. Their efforts help maintain LIV’s presence at this year’s Open.
The Pressure of Final Qualifying
Final Qualifying for The Open is an intense, one-day challenge with 36 holes played across four UK courses. With only a handful of spots available and tough conditions in play, there is no room for error. For players like Horsfield and Meronk, one bad round or a tough stretch can be the end. Meanwhile, those who manage their nerves and execute well earn one of golf’s most coveted invitations.
