Tribute to Steve DiMeglio: Celebrated Golf Journalist Passes Away at 63

American golf journalist Steve DiMeglio, known for his impactful writing for Golfweek and USA TODAY, has passed away at the age of 63 after a courageous battle with cancer. DiMeglio’s death marks a significant loss in the golfing community, where he was a familiar face at PGA Tour events and Major Championships for nearly two decades.

DiMeglio transitioned to covering golf in 2002, having previously reported on baseball. His journalism career began in 1994 at the Palm Springs Desert Sun, and he joined USA TODAY in 2000, eventually becoming the newspaper’s full-time golf reporter. 

In 2016, Gannett acquired Golfweek, where DiMeglio continued to contribute until 2023. He had a close professional relationship with golf legend Tiger Woods, who expressed his sorrow over DiMeglio’s passing. 

Woods stated, “Unfortunately, the golf world lost part of our family today… This is a very sad day for all of golf. We have truly lost a friend.”

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2022, DiMeglio shared his journey through treatment on social media, documenting his experiences with chemotherapy and maintaining a positive outlook despite the challenges he faced. His resilience inspired many within the golfing community.

The PGA Tour also paid tribute to DiMeglio, describing him as “beloved by players” and highlighting his unique perspective and humor that endeared him to many. 

A spokesperson stated, “The PGA Tour joins the golf world in mourning the loss of our friend… even in the midst of his recent, arduous battle with cancer.”

Steve DiMeglio leaves behind a legacy of passion for golf journalism and will be remembered fondly by colleagues, players, and fans alike.
