The 2024 Presidents Cup began on a challenging note for the International team, with Tom Kim openly voicing his frustration to the home crowd. After a devastating 5-0 loss in the opening four-ball session against Team USA, Kim urged Canadian fans at Royal Montreal Golf Club to rally behind their team as the event progressed.
Tom Kim Asks for Louder Support
Tom Kim, who paired with teammate Sungjae I’m in one of the day’s matchups, felt the lack of energy from the crowd affected the International team’s morale. “I think it was a little too quiet today being on home soil,” Kim said. “I wish they would have helped us out a bit more, especially being in Canada. I know how much they love golf. I’m definitely expecting more crowds to be louder and for them to be on our side.”
Kim did his best to ignite the crowd, sinking two birdies in a row while battling world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. However, Kim and Im fell 3 and 2 despite his efforts in one of the day’s most lopsided defeats.
Reflecting on the loss, Kim added, “Those boys played great today, but definitely for our team, it kind of felt like I played great, so being short kind of sucks. But we’ll figure out a way.”
Kim will not be playing in the first foursomes session on Friday, a decision that International captain Mike Weir confirmed as part of a pre-planned rotation. “Tom wasn’t in the plans for [Friday], but that doesn’t mean he might not be down the road. We’re sticking with the plan,” Weir said.
The International team will look to bounce back in the coming days, and Tom Kim remains hopeful that the Canadian fans will step up and provide the energy they need to turn things around.
