Stacy Lewis, the United States Solheim Cup team captain, has announced her three wildcard picks: Lexi Thompson, Jennifer Kupcho, and Sarah Schmelzel. The final selections complete a formidable American team that will compete against Europe at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, from September 13 to 15.
Solheim Cup 2024: U.S. Team’s Strategy and Challenges Ahead
Having competed in her seventh consecutive Solheim Cup, Lexi Thompson‘s vast experience adds tremendous value to the team. At 29 years of age, and with the possibility that this may be her final appearance as a full-time player, her participation is all the more notable. With an impressive career record of 9-7-7, she brings veteran leadership, which is indispensable for success, particularly because she is one of only two US players who have been on victorious Solheim Cup teams before.
Jennifer Kupcho will participate for the third consecutive time at the upcoming Solheim Cup. Though she has a previous record of 2-3-2 in matches, her recent performance has been impressive, with three top-five finishes since May and finishing as runner-up at the Dow Championship team event partnered alongside fellow teammate Ally Ewing.
Making her debut in the Solheim Cup team, 30-year-old Sarah Schmelzel is its newest member. With four consecutive top-10 finishes this season, including a runner-up performance at China’s Blue Bay LPGA event, she has made an impression with her consistent play despite still claiming tour victory and securing a spot on the team.
Notably, Angel Yin and Cheyenne Knight, ahead of Thompson in the final points standings, were passed over for these picks. However, Lewis emphasized the importance of experience and form in her decisions.
Captain Suzann Pettersen will lead the European squad, which was finalized one day prior. This squad presents a challenging opposition for the U.S. team. Europe has won three consecutive Solheim Cups in previous events; hence, this year’s competition is pivotal for America to win back its title.
The stage is set for an intense competition as the best players from both sides of the Atlantic converge for one of golf’s most prestigious team events.
