Jordan Spieth withdrew from the opening round of the Travelers Championship after 12 holes due to intense neck and upper back pain. He had already recorded five bogeys and was struggling physically before calling it quits on the 13th tee. This marks the first time in his professional career that the 31-year-old has withdrawn during a PGA Tour event.
Carrying Neck Pain Since Warm-Up
Spieth revealed that he began experiencing discomfort during his pre-round warm-up. A tightness in his right scapula led to radiating pain in his neck and upper back, which worsened as the round progressed.
Despite receiving assistance from his physiotherapist and using a massage gun on the course, he was unable to continue. He noted that he couldn’t turn properly or generate a normal swing by the 11th and 12th holes.
Long-Awaited Break Amid Personal Milestone
Coming into the week, Spieth had been optimistic, having enjoyed strong practice sessions and improved form following a past wrist injury. His withdrawal now provides an opportunity to rest before a major life event: he and his wife are expecting their third child in early July.
Spieth plans to recover fully and return in time for The Open Championship later that month, pending his health and family schedule.
