Scottie Scheffler could dwell on a few missed putts or a shaky short game at the Hero World Challenge, but the world No. 1 chose optimism as he signed off for 2025.

“Did a lot of good things,” Scheffler said. “I definitely saw progress on what I’ve been working on, and the offseason focus is paying off. Good place to be.”

Final Standings at the Hero World Challenge

Scheffler finished tied for fourth at Albany Golf Club, starting the day in the final group. He posted a 3-under round, but Hideki Matsuyama and Alex Noren surged ahead with 8-under 64s, forcing a playoff. Matsuyama clinched the win with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Scheffler ended two strokes off the playoff, capping a remarkable 2025.

A Season of Dominance

The 2025 PGA TOUR season was dominated by Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who together captured three of the four majors and THE PLAYERS Championship. They combined for nine wins and 26 top-10 finishes, commanding the golf world’s attention. While both have finished their tournaments, the PGA Player of the Year decision remains.

Player of the Year Race

Nominees for the PGA TOUR Player of the Year were announced last week. Though there are four contenders, the real contest is between Scheffler and McIlroy. Voting closes Friday, Dec. 12, with the winner to be revealed later.

Scheffler vs. McIlroy: Stats and Achievements

Scheffler’s 2025 featured six wins, including the PGA Championship and Open Championship. He hasn’t finished outside the top eight since March and led the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Total and Scoring Average.

McIlroy won three times, including THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters, completing a career Grand Slam. He also helped secure an away Ryder Cup victory, giving him an emotional edge despite Scheffler’s statistical dominance.

History in the Making

If Scheffler wins, he’ll become only the second player to earn the award four times, following Tiger Woods, who has won it 11 times. This would mark Scheffler’s fourth consecutive year as Player of the Year, while McIlroy has won it twice.
