In a significant move for the Ball State men’s golf program, Coach Mike Fleck has announced the signing of Samuel Harris, the GolfWeek Junior Tour Player of the Year.
Harris, a native of Charlestown, Indiana, joins the Cardinals as part of a strong recruiting class that includes Evansville North High School teammates Luke Johnston and Brody Sorrell.
Harris’s impressive junior circuit career has been marked by consistent excellence. Over the past fall, he participated in 10 events as part of the GolfWeek Junior Tour, achieving eight finishes inside the top six, including a notable win at the Elite Event in Dayton, Ohio.
During this event, Harris carded rounds of 71 and 68, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. His overall scoring average for the fall was an impressive 71.79 across 19 rounds, with 12 rounds at 71 or better and 10 rounds under par.
Coach Fleck expressed his enthusiasm about Harris’s commitment, highlighting his athleticism and determination. “Samuel is a very athletic and determined young man whose game has really taken off over the past 12 months,” Fleck noted.
“One of the things I really love about Samuel is his desire to put himself out there and compete on any level. He dominated the GolfWeek Junior Tour Fall Series and his ranking has gone up significantly,” Fleck added.
Harris’s achievements extend beyond his junior tour performances. As a freshman and sophomore at Silver Creek High School, he contributed to the team’s fourth-place tie in the 2022 IHSAA state finals. His experience playing alongside current Cardinals star Carter Smith will undoubtedly be beneficial as he transitions to collegiate golf.
The signing of Harris is part of a broader strategy by Coach Fleck to bolster the Cardinals’ roster. With five seniors on the current team, Fleck is expected to add at least one more student-athlete this spring.
The addition of Harris, Johnston, and Sorrell follows last year’s signings of Happy Gilmore and Gavin Hare, further solidifying Ball State’s position as a competitive force in Mid-American Conference golf.
Harris will begin competing with the Cardinals next fall, bringing his talent and competitive spirit to the team. His commitment to becoming an even better competitor aligns with Ball State’s vision for its golf program, making him an excellent fit for the Cardinals family.
As the golf community looks forward to seeing Harris in action, his signing marks an exciting chapter for both him and Ball State men’s golf.
