Sahith Theegala Poised for Breakthrough at PGA Championship 2024!

“It’s weird. I don’t feel like there are only 11 players in the world better than me,” Theegala confessed. “Obviously, with the whole tour/LIV thing, that’s not the case. Some guys out on LIV are better golfers than me, subjectively and objectively. But I feel myself getting better on and off the course.”
This self-reflection might seem like false modesty, but Theegala’s grounded perspective sets him apart in a sport driven by confidence. His college career, highlighted by winning the Haskins, Hogan, and Nicklaus awards in 2020, instilled a belief in his abilities that he strives to recapture.
“I don’t know if I’m ever going to feel that way again,” Theegala admitted. “We all strive to get to that point. But yeah, sometimes you look at the guys on the top of the world, and you’re like, Am I ever going to be like Rory or Xander? And the answer is no. Or even Brooks; the answer is no.”
Despite success, Theegala has yet to solidify his place among the greats. He acknowledges the gap between him and golf’s elite with just one tour win in 89 starts and only one top-25 finish in major championships. His focus remains on gradual improvement rather than immediate triumphs.
“Even though it might be a minimal amount of progress, I feel it, and I think my team around me feels it,” Theegala explained. “I don’t try and compare myself too much, but it just feels like every single part of my game, I have a straightforward path to—I know it can improve.”
Currently trailing only Xander Schauffele, who shot a record-breaking 62, Theegala’s position is promising. His performance, bolstered by consecutive birdies on his final three holes, showcases his potential for a transformative weekend. However, Theegala remains focused and grounded, aware of the challenges ahead.
“There’s a level of acceptance I’ve given myself recently, and it’s translated into my golf well,” Theegala said. “Kind of the same deal, though, like no expectations, everything feels like a bonus.”
