With threat of severe weather looming, the Ryder Cup opening ceremony has been shifted up by a day. Instead of Thursday, the event will now take place on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET at Bethpage Black. The decision comes as organizers aim to avoid disruption from expected thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

Rain Forecast Forces Strategic Change

The PGA of America cited forecasts calling for nearly 0.75 inches of rain on Thursday and persistent inclement weather throughout the week as key reasons for the change. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and intermittent showers were expected to affect not just the ceremony day but also practice sessions and setup operations.

Pairings Announcement Unchanged

Despite the ceremony’s rescheduling, the traditional announcement of pairings by USA captain Keegan Bradley and Team Europe captain Luke Donald will still occur on Thursday as previously planned. General admission ticket holders will be permitted entry on both Wednesday and Thursday under the new schedule.

Weather’s Role in the Week Ahead

By moving the ceremony earlier, organizers hope to reduce weather-related disruption to the event’s buildup. Yet the forecast still shows challenging conditions, including scattered showers and storms on Thursday and rainfall spilling into Friday. The changing conditions are expected to test flexibility in logistics, practice sessions, and daily operations leading into the main competition.
