Marco Penge is set to play alongside Masters champion Rory McIlroy for the first time in his career, and he’s embracing the moment. The Englishman, who has enjoyed a remarkable comeback season, will tee it up with McIlroy and Ryder Cup star Tyrrell Hatton at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the opening leg of the DP World Tour playoffs.
Penge, 26, said he’s been eager to share a round with McIlroy for years and doesn’t expect nerves to get the better of him.
“I’m playing with one of the best players in the world for the first time,” Penge said. “I don’t think I’ll be too nervous, it’s just adrenaline. I actually play my best golf when I feel that way.”
A season of redemption and success
The pairing caps off an incredible year for Penge, who returned to competition after serving a suspension for a betting breach. Since his return, he has claimed three DP World Tour titles, in China, Denmark, and Spain, pushing himself up the Race to Dubai standings and even into Ryder Cup conversation.
“There were rumors about a possible captain’s pick,” Penge said. “That alone shows how far I’ve come.”
Power meets power off the tee
Known as one of the longest hitters on tour, Penge regularly averages over 320 yards off the tee. McIlroy, who led the PGA Tour in driving distance in 2024, will provide the perfect benchmark.
“It’ll be a bit of a flex,” Penge laughed. “Whoever brings their best on the day will probably be the longest.”
Looking ahead to life in the U.S.
Penge is also preparing for a major career move, and a life change. With dual membership, he’s planning to relocate to the United States in 2026 with his wife Sophie, son Enzo, and another baby on the way.
His PGA Tour status isn’t finalized yet, but Penge says he’s already mapping out his schedule.
“I’m a numbers guy,” he explained. “I’ve worked out where I want to be, playing in majors, elevated events, and coming back here for tournaments like this. I don’t think I’ll play fewer events; if anything, I’ll play more.”
Ready for the challenge
As he prepares to stand on the tee next to one of golf’s biggest names, Penge is relishing the experience rather than fearing it.
“I just want to enjoy the moment and appreciate where I am,” he said. “Playing with the top players in the world, that’s what you dream about.”
