Nelly Korda Sizzles, Close on Heels of Early Chevron Championship Lead!

Nelly Korda Sizzles, Close on Heels of Early Chevron Championship Lead!

During the initial round of the Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods, Nelly Korda exhibited her impressive skills by rallying in the latter part of play to trail just two strokes behind the leading player.

Despite confessing that she was only functioning at 70% capability, Korda’s outstanding showing highlighted her persistence and ability as a contender for triumph in this year’s inaugural women’s major tournament.

Nelly Korda, aiming to become only the third LPGA player to secure five consecutive wins, unleashed her firepower with a 4-under 68, emerging as the standout performer in the afternoon wave. Reflecting on her round, Korda acknowledged initial nerves but found her rhythm as she turned, allowing her to play freely and confidently.

The 23-year-old phenom’s recent dominance, including three consecutive wins last month, left her physically drained upon her return to competition. However, fueled by determination and a mid-round boost from an apple, Korda capitalized on her length and precision to notch six birdies, capitalizing on the par 5s and delivering pinpoint wedge shots to the flag.

Nelly Korda’s stellar performance positions her in a tie for second place, alongside Marina Alex and Minami Katsu, trailing leader Lauren Coughlin by just two shots. Notably, her path to victory was cleared slightly without contenders such as world No. 2 Lilia Vu and Angel Yin due to injury.

As Korda eyes the Chevron Championship title, her pursuit of history looms large, with only Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez having won five consecutive LPGA events. With her exceptional form and determination, Korda stands poised to etch her name alongside golf’s elite.
