Fan Steps in as Caddie for C.T. Pan After Mike (Fluff) Cowan’s On-Course Fall!

During the final round of the RBC Canadian Open, there was a surprising incident where C.T. Pan’s usual caddie, Mike (Fluff) Cowan, had an accident and fell on the hilly third hole at Hamilton Golf & Country Club due to light rain. As an unexpected solution, a fan stepped in as his replacement for that particular day.

The fall left Mike Cowan shaken, and although initial reports indicated his injuries were non-serious, he was taken to the clubhouse for evaluation. Cowan has been caddying for Pan since the WM Phoenix Open in February and was determined to continue but eventually had to seek medical attention.

The incident unfolded on the third hole, where Cowan’s slip led to his temporary departure. A fan from the crowd was quickly recruited to carry Pan’s bag for the remainder of the hole. The Rules of Golf permit a caddie to change at any time provided the player has only one caddie at a time and does not change caddies just for advice.

Mike Cowan embarked on his professional caddying career alongside Ed Sabo in 1976. After two decades working with Peter Jacobsen, he gained notable fame by teaming up with Tiger Woods in 1996 and supporting him during his historic triumph at the Masters tournament of 1997. From there, Cowan began a successful partnership lasting several years with Jim Furyk until their official separation earlier this year.

Although they encountered a mishap, Pan and his substitute caddie were able to finish the round. The occurrence shed light on how uncertain this sport can be, as well as showcased the commitment of those who participate in it – from experienced caddies to devoted enthusiasts ready to step up at any given time.

After the tournament ended, Cowan received an outpouring of support from fans and his fellow players, who wished him a quick recovery. His respected and beloved stature within the golf community is thanks to decades-long participation on tour.
