Rory McIlroy, once a staunch critic of LIV Golf, has softened his stance in recent months. He urged fellow players who opposed its emergence to “get over it,” signaling support for a more unified golf landscape. McIlroy believes integration is essential to the sport’s future, even as he acknowledges lingering skepticism.
PGA–LIV Merger Gains Momentum
McIlroy has expressed optimism about a potential agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV’s Saudi-backed backers via the Public Investment Fund. He described a merger as “needed for the health of the professional game in the long term,” suggesting the relaxation of hostilities may lead to broader benefits. The proposed structure would unify commercial rights while preserving administrative independence of each tour.
Bridging Rivalries and Building Consensus
Despite his critical past, McIlroy recently endorsed the possible return of LIV players under fair terms. He acknowledged that face-saving mechanisms and structural changes could ease tensions and promote collaboration. McIlroy sees value in safeguarding the game’s integrity while moving past the division that began in 2022.
