Matt McCarty stunned the field with an 11-under-par 60 in the final round of the Baycurrent Classic at Yokohama Country Club. That score etched his name into the tournament’s record books as the lowest single-round effort in the event’s history.
Despite not contending for the title, his performance drew headlines for its sheer brilliance and near-mythical potential.
One Shot Away From History
McCarty came within arm’s reach of making history. After a back nine that included eight birdies in a row, he needed just a birdie on the par-5 18th to shoot 58. But his drive veered off course into the trees, and he was unable to recover.
He ultimately made bogey on the final hole, sealing a 60 rather than a tour-historical 58. His emotional reaction afterward made clear how much the chance meant to him.
“Weird to Play That Well and Feel This”
In reflecting on his round, McCarty described the experience as “weird”, both exhilarating and disappointing. His last swing, he said, “wiped it out” of contention, leaving him in disbelief given how clean most of his round had been.
But even “wounded,” he acknowledged that few rounds like this one come around often.
