James Piot Becomes First Ex-LIV Player to Rejoin PGA Tour

PGA

James Piot, who won the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship, made waves when he joined LIV Golf in 2022 under a reported $6 million, two-year contract. Despite the promise, his time on the LIV circuit yielded limited success. He managed only one top-10 finish in 14 starts before losing his position. After that, Piot turned to the Asian Tour, though his momentum was later slowed by shoulder surgery.

Returning to the PGA via Sponsor Exemption

Now 26, Piot is making his way back to where he always hoped to be. With no LIV appearances since 2023, he qualified under PGA Tour rules for a sponsor exemption. That invitation came from the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, marking the first time a former LIV player has rejoined the PGA Tour through such a route. Piot described receiving the call as one of the happiest moments of his career.

A Dream Realized in Detroit

Originally preparing to enter the tournament’s Monday qualifier, Piot was caught off guard by the exemption. He called the opportunity “the coolest thing in the world.” As a Michigan native from Farmington Hills, the chance to return to the PGA Tour in his home state made the moment even more meaningful.

Looking Forward with Optimism

Though Piot’s competitive results on both LIV Golf and the Asian Tour have been modest, he believes his form is improving. The Rocket Classic offers him a chance to prove his potential and restart his PGA Tour journey. His return also mirrors that of players like Laurie Canter, who have similarly transitioned away from LIV back to mainstream professional golf.
