Viktor Hovland revealed that a neck injury sustained during Saturday’s foursomes match forced him to withdraw from both the afternoon fourballs and his Sunday singles match. He described the situation as “pretty upsetting,” noting that by Sunday morning, he was unable to move his neck and had no choice but to step aside.

Envelope Rule Means English Also Sits Out

Because of the Ryder Cup’s envelope rule, Hovland’s absence meant his scheduled opponent, Harris English, was also withdrawn. The match was treated as a tie, with each player receiving half a point. Hovland expressed regret that English, who was healthy and ready to play, was sidelined because of his own injury.

No Easy Fix But Sympathy and Reflection

Hovland acknowledged that there’s no perfect solution to such a situation. While some have called for changes to the envelope rule, he said he views the half-point outcome as “a better way overall,” given the circumstances. He also emphasized a shared understanding among players: nobody wants to sit out if they’re healthy.

He also voiced sympathy for Harris English, saying he felt “very bad” that English, despite being fit, was not able to play.
