Major championships bring pressure, but nothing compares to PGA Tour Q School. Careers are decided in a single week. One hot run can change a life, while one mistake can undo years of work.
Few understand that reality better than Ben Kohles.
A Career Lived on the Edge
Since turning professional in 2012, Kohles has existed on the fringes of the PGA Tour. He has moved in and out of status, never quite securing long-term stability.
After finishing 145th in the 2025 FedEx Cup standings, Kohles earned limited PGA Tour status for the following season. Useful, but not secure. Q School was his best chance to lock in a full card.
A Dream Start at Q School
For three and a half rounds, everything went perfectly.
Rounds of 68, 66, and 65 put Kohles firmly in contention. A steady start to the final round lifted him to the top of the leaderboard. With only the top five earning PGA Tour cards under the new format, he was exactly where he needed to be.
The Moment Everything Changed
Disaster struck on the 8th hole.
After missing his drive into the trees, Kohles’ ball came to rest among leaves and small twigs. As he attempted to remove a twig near the ball, it moved.
That single movement triggered a one-stroke penalty.
Under Rule 9 and Rule 15.1b of the Rules of Golf, players are penalized if they cause their ball to move, except on the putting green. Kohles was assessed the penalty and forced to play his next shot as his third.
From Leaderboard to Freefall
The incident led to a double-bogey, dropping Kohles from first place to a tie for eighth. Suddenly, he was outside the crucial top five.
Still within reach, the momentum quickly vanished. On the next hole, a drive into the water resulted in another double-bogey, sending him tumbling to a tie for 22nd.
A Brief Spark, Then More Damage
A birdie on the 10th offered brief hope. It did not last.
Another double-bogey followed on the 11th hole. From there, Kohles shifted into damage-control mode. He played the final seven holes in level par, mixing two birdies with two bogeys, but the damage was already irreversible.
The Costliest Prize Missed
A closing five-over-par 75 left Kohles tied for 29th.
The result meant he missed out on the most valuable prize in professional golf: a PGA Tour card.
Q School, Explained in One Moment
That single rules incident summed up Q School perfectly. A season, and sometimes an entire career, can hinge on one small moment.
