A thunderous “Rory roar” echoed around MediaCity in Salford as Rory McIlroy was crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year, ending a 36-year drought for golf.

The 36-year-old Northern Irishman capped a remarkable season by becoming only the third golfer to win the award, following Dai Rees in 1957 and Nick Faldo in 1989.

A Year That Defined a Career

McIlroy’s victory crowned a season that will define his legacy. In April, he completed the career grand slam with an emotional Masters triumph at Augusta, ending an 11-year major drought. He then captained Europe to a dramatic Ryder Cup win in New York, thriving amid intense home support for the Americans. He also secured the European Order of Merit.

“2025 has been the year that I made my dreams come true,” McIlroy said. “From Augusta to the Ryder Cup, it has been a year dreams are made of.”

Masters Glory Seals the Vote

The Masters win proved decisive. After years of near misses and heartbreak at Augusta, McIlroy finally joined golf’s most exclusive club alongside Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen.

“I didn’t make it easy on myself,” he admitted. “When you want something so much, the obstacle becomes yourself. The heartbreaks made it even sweeter.”

He also paid tribute to his family, thanking his parents for their sacrifices and calling his wife Erica and daughter Poppy “my rock.”

Kildunne and Norris Complete the Podium

England rugby star Ellie Kildunne finished a surprise second after playing a central role in the Red Roses’ Women’s Rugby World Cup triumph. Formula One world champion Lando Norris placed third.

For the first time in the show’s history, the top three were revealed before the final moments, eliminating darts champion Luke Littler and England footballers Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton.

Ryder Cup and Coaching Honours

Golf enjoyed further recognition as Europe’s Ryder Cup team was named Team of the Year following their dramatic Bethpage Black victory.

Sarina Wiegman claimed Coach of the Year for the second time after guiding England to Women’s Euros success, while Swedish pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis won World Sports Star of the Year for a second consecutive year.

Emotional Moments Beyond Sport

Nineteen-year-old Michelle Agyemang was named Young Sports Personality of the Year, while Thierry Henry received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The evening’s most powerful moment came with the Helen Rollason Award, presented to two fathers who lost daughters in the Southport dance class tragedy. Their marathon efforts to honour their children’s memories moved the entire audience.

McIlroy summed up the emotion of the night simply: “Seeing those fathers up there, they are heroes. It makes the good moments even more special.”

In a year of perfection on and off the course, McIlroy’s final words matched his performances, measured, heartfelt, and unforgettable.
