The race for PGA Tour Player of the Year looked set to end in Rory McIlroy’s favor. Instead, Scottie Scheffler claimed the honor, raising questions about whether McIlroy was hard done by.
Voted on by fellow PGA Tour players, the award ultimately went to the world number one. However, many believe McIlroy’s season carried greater historical and emotional significance.
Scottie Scheffler’s Dominant Season
Scheffler delivered another outstanding year. After a slow start caused by a hand injury, he recovered strongly and recorded six PGA Tour victories.
His wins included the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Early doubts, including a Phil Mickelson tweet questioning whether he would win before the Ryder Cup, quickly faded as Scheffler reasserted his dominance.
That consistency earned him a fourth straight Jack Nicklaus Award, a streak previously matched only by Tiger Woods.
Rory McIlroy’s Historic Achievements
McIlroy’s season, however, was defined by history. His long-awaited Masters victory completed the career Grand Slam, placing him alongside Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
That win, secured in a playoff against Justin Rose, helped banish years of frustration and near-misses at Augusta. It was not only the highlight of the season, but arguably the defining moment of McIlroy’s career.
More Than Just the Masters
In addition to the green jacket, McIlroy won The Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s flagship event, and claimed victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
These wins reinforced the quality of his season and strengthened the argument that his overall impact went beyond raw numbers.
Ryder Cup Contribution Overlooked?
McIlroy also played a key role in Europe’s Ryder Cup success at Bethpage. Despite facing unacceptable abuse from spectators, he delivered when it mattered.
That contribution, however, appeared to carry little weight in the final voting.
Final Verdict
Scheffler undoubtedly enjoyed another exceptional year and deserves recognition. However, McIlroy’s Masters win, career Grand Slam, and overall narrative gave his season a unique significance.
On balance, many will feel the PGA Tour Player of the Year award should have gone McIlroy’s way this time.
