Matt Fitzpatrick closed the 2025 DP World Tour season with a dramatic victory at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, defeating Rory McIlroy in a playoff to claim his third title at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The Englishman began the final round one stroke behind the lead but delivered a flawless bogey-free 66, registering three early birdies and finishing at 18-under to set a demanding clubhouse target.
McIlroy Forces Extra Holes
Rory McIlroy, needing an eagle at the last to tie, produced the required moment of brilliance to reach 18-under and force sudden death. However, his momentum vanished when he found the penalty area with his tee shot on the first playoff hole. Fitzpatrick secured par from short range to seal the championship.
McIlroy Secures Seventh Harry Vardon Trophy
Although he missed out on the tournament title, McIlroy’s runner-up finish delivered him his seventh Harry Vardon Trophy. His 2025 season included a historic Masters win to complete the career Grand Slam, a home triumph at the Amgen Irish Open, and a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black.
He has now topped the Race to Dubai standings in four consecutive seasons and is one title away from Colin Montgomerie’s record.
Strong Performances Behind the Leaders
Dubai-based players Tommy Fleetwood and Laurie Canter joined Ludvig Åberg and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen in a tie for third at 17-under, one shot shy of the playoff.
Fitzpatrick’s Season Turns Around
Fitzpatrick began the season inconsistently but rebuilt momentum during the summer. Notable results included:
- Top-ten finish at the PGA Championship
- Fourth at the Genesis Scottish Open
- Fourth at The Open
- Strong showings at the British Masters, Omega European Masters, and BMW PGA Championship
- A key contribution to Europe’s Ryder Cup win
He arrived in Dubai with renewed confidence and posted rounds of 69, 69, and 66 to sit one back heading into Sunday.
Final-Round Precision
Fitzpatrick made early birdies at the second, fourth, and fifth before holding steady through the middle stretch. Two more birdies at the 14th and 15th brought him back into contention, and he converted from five feet at the 18th to reach 18-under, ultimately earning his place in the playoff.
His playoff par marked his first DP World Tour victory since the 2023 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Fitzpatrick Reflects on a Transformative Year
“It means the world,” Fitzpatrick said after the win. He detailed his early-season struggles and credited his resurgence to consistent work and strong support from his inner circle.
He added that the achievement felt particularly meaningful given the turnaround required: “To be here now is very special.”
