The PGA Tour confirmed that The Sentry will not be held at its traditional home, the Plantation Course at Kapalua, when the 2026 season begins. The decision comes after mounting concerns over extreme drought conditions across Maui, which have made hosting the prestigious event at its iconic venue impossible.
The tournament has long served as the PGA Tour’s season opener and a celebratory start for the year’s winners, but organizers emphasized that environmental and logistical realities left them with no choice but to move.
Why Kapalua Was Deemed Unfit
Kapalua’s challenges stem largely from the severe drought now gripping more than 90% of Maui County. Local restrictions on irrigation and water usage have strained the Plantation Course’s ability to maintain tournament-ready conditions.
In addition, agronomic experts flagged that the turf could not be prepared to professional standards under current limitations. Combined with the logistical hurdles of hosting a large-scale international event in such conditions, the Tour determined that Kapalua could not feasibly stage The Sentry in 2026.
What Happens Next for The Sentry
While the PGA Tour has not announced a replacement venue, discussions are underway to find a suitable host course for the event. The tournament’s format is expected to remain unchanged, continuing to feature winners from the previous season along with the top 50 players from the FedEx Cup standings.
Organizers also confirmed that other Hawaiian events, including the Sony Open, will proceed as scheduled, signaling that the relocation is a targeted response to Kapalua’s unique circumstances rather than a broader shift away from Hawaii.
Looking Ahead
The move marks the end, at least temporarily, of a long-standing tradition that tied The Sentry to one of golf’s most scenic and recognizable courses. Still, PGA Tour officials stressed that the decision was made out of necessity to protect both the tournament and the players.
As the search for a new venue continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the 2026 season begins with the same excitement and prestige that has defined The Sentry for decades.
