Hughes’ Stellar Performance

Hughes got off to a quick start, making birdies on two of his first three holes, and then “piling it on” with three straight birdies around the turn on holes 8, 9, and 10. He nearly flirted with a 59, but back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes brought him back to earth.

However, he quickly regained his composure with birdies on two of his final three holes to secure the lead. “I had a nice feel with the putter, so it was really just about continuing to put my foot on the gas and go forward,” Hughes said. His final birdie of the day on the 18th hole was from 12 feet.

Ryder Cup Players’ Mixed Bag of Results

With the Ryder Cup just two weeks away, ten of the 12 U.S. team members are in the field at Silverado Resort. The day produced a wide range of results for the American contingent. Ben Griffin, a captain’s pick for his first Ryder Cup, had the best showing of the group, carding a bogey-free 64 to tie for second place.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, on the other hand, had a frustrating day. He finished with a 2-under 70, ending his record-tying streak of 21 consecutive rounds in the 60s. “I felt like I did some things well out there, I just wasn’t quite getting the reward,” Scheffler said.

Other notable results for the Ryder Cup players included Russell Henley with a 65, J.J. Spaun with a 67, and Sam Burns with a 71. The remaining Ryder Cup players in the field, Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, and Cameron Young, all finished at even-par 72.

The Rest of the Field

Joining Ben Griffin in a tie for second at 8-under is Matt McCarty, who also had a bogey-free round of 64. Russell Henley and Lanto Griffin are tied for fourth place after shooting 7-under 65s. The Procore Championship is the first of seven events in the FedExCup Fall, which is used to finalize eligibility for the 2026 PGA TOUR season.
