Sweden’s Alex Norén has been appointed as the fifth and final vice-captain for Team Europe at the upcoming Ryder Cup, set to take place September 26–28 at Bethpage Black in New York. The announcement came less than a day after Europe’s 12-man squad was finalized.
A Familiar Face Returns in a New Role
Norén brings both experience and emotional weight to the leadership team, having competed in the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris. He made a memorable contribution that year by securing two points from three matches, highlighted by a dramatic 40-foot putt on the final hole to defeat Bryson DeChambeau.
Captain Donald Praises Norén’s Attributes
Team captain Luke Donald welcomed the addition, emphasizing Norén’s humility, meticulous preparation, and strong rapport with players. “He is a good friend and prepares as well as anyone,” Donald said, noting that Norén will provide a valuable link, particularly with the Scandinavian contingent.
A Leadership Team with Continuity and Fresh Perspective
Norén joins a group of vice-captains that includes Francesco Molinari, Edoardo Molinari, Thomas Bjørn, and José María Olazábal. All four served under Donald during Europe’s 2023 Ryder Cup victory, offering continuity and proven leadership. Norén’s appointment also refreshes the lineup, as he steps in for Nicolas Colsaerts, who was not retained this year.
Ryder Cup 2025: European Lineup and Outlook
With the playing squad now complete, Norén’s appointment finalizes Team Europe’s leadership structure. The squad and support team are preparing for what is expected to be one of the fiercest Ryder Cup battles in recent memory as they head to Bethpage Black later this month.
