The 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont once again set a high bar in professional golf with a prize purse of $21.5 million. This matched the record total from 2024, maintaining the championship’s place as the most lucrative event among men’s major tournaments.
JJ Spaun, who claimed his first major title in dramatic fashion, earned a staggering $4.3 million for his victory. That figure exceeded the winner’s checks from both the Masters and the PGA Championship this year, reinforcing the U.S. Open’s financial prestige. Spaun’s final-round comeback not only cemented his name in major championship history but also delivered one of the biggest individual payouts the game has ever seen.
Payouts for Top Finishers
Scottish runner-up Robert MacIntyre didn’t leave disappointed, securing just over $2 million for his impressive performance. Viktor Hovland, who finished third, received approximately $1.46 million. Players who finished inside the top ten were handsomely rewarded, with those between fourth and sixth place collecting between $880,000 and $1 million. Finishing inside the top ten at a U.S. Open continues to offer both prestige and a significant financial boost.
Further down the leaderboard, players finishing in the top 20 still earned several hundred thousand dollars each. This distribution highlights how competitive and financially rewarding the U.S. Open remains, even for those not in contention on Sunday afternoon.
Compensation for the Full Field
All 66 golfers who made the cut received a minimum payout of $41,700. Even those who didn’t make it past Friday earned $10,000 each, an ongoing tradition by the USGA to acknowledge the achievement of qualifying for one of the toughest fields in golf.
The U.S. Open purse has nearly doubled since 2021, when it stood at $12.5 million. While the total remained flat this year compared to 2024, it still represents a dramatic increase over the past few years. USGA CEO Mike Whan stated that the purse reflects the tournament’s growing global stature and the organization’s commitment to rewarding excellence at the highest level.
