Seamus Power Struggles in Opening Round of Sony Open

Seamus Power faced a challenging start to his 2025 season at the Sony Open in Hawaii, carding a three-over-par 73. The West Waterford golfer, back in action after a seven-week break since the RSM Classic, struggled significantly off the tee, managing to hit only three fairways throughout his round.

Power’s performance at Waialae Country Club left him tied for 129th out of 143 players, making his path to the cut increasingly difficult.

He did not manage to record a single birdie during his round, and with Michael Thorbjornsen and Jake Knapp withdrawing due to injury, Lanto Griffin was the only alternate present.

As play was suspended due to darkness, six players shared the lead at six-under-par 64. Among them were England’s Harry Hall, Adam Schenk, Eric Cole, Denny McCarthy, Paul Peterson, and Tom Hoge, who led by one shot over a group that included Sweden’s Henrik Norlander and Canada’s Adam Hadwin.

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, fresh off a record-setting victory at The Sentry last week, finished his round with a three-under-par 67 as he aims to become the third player to sweep the Hawaii swing.

A Disappointing Round For Seamus Power

Power’s day began on a sour note when he dropped his first shot on the second hole after missing the fairway and failing to convert a nine-foot par attempt.

His first fairway hit came at the fifth hole, but he continued to struggle, dropping another shot at the 13th after finding himself in a greenside bunker.

Despite hitting his second fairway on the 14th hole, Seamus Power could not capitalize on opportunities for birdies on the final holes, missing crucial putts from 15 feet on both the 16th and 17th.

He concluded his round with a disappointing six on the par-five 18th hole after misjudging his third shot from 43 yards. Ultimately, Power ranked joint last in driving accuracy for the day.

In contrast to Power’s struggles, several rookies enjoyed successful outings. Notably, Paul Peterson made his PGA TOUR debut after an extensive career across six tours and numerous countries. Reflecting on his journey, Peterson expressed gratitude for his experiences that led him to this moment.

Harry Hall also celebrated finding a new coach in Butch Harmon, which he believes has positively impacted his game since their collaboration began.
