Taylor Pendrith made a remarkable comeback to competitive golf, shooting an impressive 10-under-par 61 in the opening round of the Shriners Children’s Open. This performance placed him three strokes ahead after his first appearance since playing for the International Team at the Presidents Cup. The Canadian golfer equaled his career-best round on the PGA Tour with an almost impeccable display at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
Pendrith hit all but one fairway and missed just one green in regulation. His lone hiccup came on the 18th hole, where he pulled his drive but managed to save par with a brilliant recovery.
Taylor Pendrith’s Dominant Start After a Break
After taking two weeks off following the Presidents Cup, Taylor Pendrith showed no signs of rust. “I didn’t really expect a 10 under,” Pendrith said after his round. “I thought I would be a little bit more rusty, but obviously thrilled.”
The 32-year-old played the round well though his drives were good, he again hit his wedges well and also his putting was impressive. Pendrith was threatening to break 60 after the last turn but could only watch as his eagle on the par-5 ninth tee shot landed short of the green and into the sand, making a par instead.
Despite missing out on a course record, Pendrith expressed his excitement for the rest of the tournament: “I feel rested and excited to play… just got to keep getting back into the rhythm of things for the next few days.”
Taylor Pendrith is in a great spot to advance – the player he replaced in the Presidents Cup team, had a 2-3 record before being dropped for this match. All are waiting to see whether he can sustain the kind of form as he enters Las Vegas with the clear end sight of increasing his podium finishes to secure a victory.
