Thanks to a sponsor exemption, Miles Russell, the 15-year-old golf savant from Florida, is all set to make his debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic of the PGA Tour. The competition will be hosted at Detroit Golf Club starting June 27th, where he’ll face off against some of the world’s top players, including Rickie Fowler, who has been crowned as defending champion.
“Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players,” Russell said on Monday. “I’m looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month.”
Making headlines, Russell has achieved a remarkable feat by being the youngest player to have ever qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour and made it through. His exceptional performance of 5-under 66 at the Lecom Suncoast Classic in Longwood, Florida, during April left everyone amazed. Juggling between his golf aspirations and online classes since eighth grade, this high school freshman from Jacksonville Beach is truly commendable.
In 2023, Russell was named the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Player of the Year. His notable achievements include a dominant seven-shot victory in the Junior PGA Championship and becoming the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship.
Jason Langwell, Executive Director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, expressed his excitement about Russell’s participation: “He has proved with his many accomplishments at such a young age that he belongs, and we are excited to see Miles compete alongside the world’s best golfers here at Detroit Golf Club.”
Miles Russell has displayed some remarkable performances throughout his journey. In a qualifying round for the Puerto Rico Open earlier this year, the southpaw golfer came close to securing a spot in the PGA Tour event but lost out narrowly in a playoff match.
Russell is slated to participate in the US Amateur, taking place at Oakland Hills Country Club, following his appearance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This event presents another opportunity for him to exhibit his abilities on a national level once he returns to Michigan in July.
With his entrance into the PGA Tour looming, all eyes will be on this budding prodigy to observe how he navigates through the tests and strains associated with performing at an elite standard in golf.
